Can you explain GSM?
- GSM stands for “grams per square meter” and is actually a measurement of the WEIGHT of the fabric. In general, when talking about natural fibers (bamboo, hemp, cotton, etc.) higher GSM equates to more absorbency. That being said, there’s other factors that change the absorbency of a fabric and this can make different fabrics of the same GSM have very different absorbencies.
Largest Factors affecting absorbency:
- The fiber itself - of the 3 materials mentioned above, hemp is the most absorbent, and cotton is the least. This means that a 300 GSM hemp fabric will absorb more than a 300 GSM cotton fabric, even with the same knit style. This is why GSM isn’t the end-all be-all of absorbency.
- The knit style of the fabric - a jersey or interlock style knit (think t-shirt) has less surface area, and even at the same weight typically wont absorb as much as a french terry (or looped) style fabric.
- Another consideration is the SPEED of absorbency. Of the 3 fabrics mentioned, while cotton is technically the least absorbent, it is the FASTEST absorber. While hemp may hold more, it takes longer for the fabric to actually grab on to the moisture. This is especially a consideration if you have a flooder (a baby who pees faster than a diaper can grab on to the liquid) or a kiddo who is extra sensitive to urine against the skin.
